Dear Mr. President

Environmentally sound

Dear President Obama,

How refreshing your environmental policies are turning out to be! Like a glass of clean, clear water. It seems as if the whole world is sighing with relief, taking good deep breaths full of hope.

Oh dear I am waxing effusive. But I can’t help it. It’s been such a depressing time, particularly for us Americans abroad. It’s been awful having a President who blocked every environmentally sound idea.

Thank you for bringing change!  Now if you can get us signed up with the rest of the world…   Sincerely, VNV

Congratulations, but stop the killing!

Dear President Obama,

This being my first letter to you on this blog, I  congratulate you with all my heart on becoming President of our really fine country.    You’ve done good things so far.  You’ve stopped torture; you’ve set out to close Guantánamo; you named excellent envoys in George Mitchell and Richard Holbrooke.   But now I must ask you something.  This is what I wrote in the website
Are you going to continue the irresponsible unmanned bombing missions over Pakistan?   I just read that today we killed 10 people.   We said we had killed 5 “insurgents”.   That leaves 5 non-insurgents, right?  Please do something to stop the killing.

Sincerely, VNV

Dear Mr. President,
I wonder if I can get the three headlines about you today into one letter.  The first was that Obama was visiting you in the White House.  After that, there was the one saying you were the least popular President in the history of America (at least since there has been polling).  And finally, there was the one saying you  had been authorizing clandestine attacks across the borders of countries not at war with us, ever since 2004.
Well, that’s no surprise.  What I want to know is, how are you going to explain your rationale for this to Barack Obama?  Do you expect him to join you in this treason?  For treason is what it is.  It is giving aid and comfort to our enemies.  You haven’t been killing insurgents or terrorists.  You have been killling women and children and in consequence swelling the ranks of our sworn; revengeful enemies.  TRAITOR!  It is no wonder you are the least popular President.  You, Sir, should be impeached.   It must take a lot of doing for President-elect Obama to keep a civil tongue in his head.
Sincerely, VNV

UNFPA or 34 Million Friends
Dear Mr. President,
I just read that one of President-elect Obama’s first acts may be to rescind your order curtailing financing to international groups that give advice on birth control and have the audacity to mention abortion.  Thank heavens!  Now maybe we can get back to supporting the U.N. Population Fund, UNFPA, from whose resources we cut those $34 million dollars that my mother’s friend Jane Roberts has been trying to restore with her organization “34 Million Friends.”  If you don’t know about it, look it up:
Don’t you think it’s about time you took note of the women whose lives you have put at risk by your narrow-minded, vicious tactics?
Sincerely, VNV

Flogging a dead horse?

Dear Mr.President,
Writing to you now sometimes seems like flogging a dead horse.  Only, you’re not dead; there is still a lot of damage you can do – and possibly will do.  You are leaving President-elect Obama a mass of problems even Hercules couldn’t  clear out, if you understand my reference.
What heartens me is how most of the rest of the world has reacted to Obama’s election.  Did you see all those jubilent crowds?  Did you see that most people would love to love America?  Did you see them waving non-burning American flags?   America used to be a beacon of hope.  My hope is that America will become that beacon once more.   Your policies have almost doused the flame.  It’s asking a lot of Obama, to hope that he can kindle it again, but there are literally billions of people around the world who will support him in his attempt.
So please.  Don’t mess up these last days.  You’ve done enough.
Sincerely, VNV

Dear Mr. President,
That was a fine welcome speech you gave to Obama today.  Both you and Senator McCain have made it much easier for all Americans to pull together now in order to get our country back on track.  I was proud of you for your generosity, and the election made me proud of my wonderful country once again.
Sincerely, VNV

Mccainations and Obamanations

Dear Mr. President,
Today your successor is being elected.   Even as I write, the first polls will be opening on the East coast.  Reading some of the comments to articles on CNN or CBS, you would think the world were coming to an end.  Either McCain will be elected, and the rich will get richer and the poor get poorer and the war in Iraq will never end.  Or Obama will be elected, and everyone will be poor and socialized and taken over by the Moslem extremists.
It’s like that old joke:  “If ________ is elected, then within a week there will be police in the streets and military troops on parade and sorrow will abound and the talk will be all of war and death.”
Well of course.  Veterans Day is usually within a week of elections – and in this year, exactly a week after.  So of course there will be police out there, and troops, and parades, and sorrow.  And all of England will hold silent for two minutes at 11:11 a.m. on 11.11.08.
So let’s try to bind up the nation’s wounds after this election. Let’s remember that both of these men are good and honest men whose good and honest views have been distorted by the election process, just as their names have been distorted in this title.   Once the election is over, let us return to being a band of brothers and sisters in a free and just society!
Sincerely, VNV
